POLICIES
Disclaimer
The structure, itinerary and some internship options for our Intern Around the World has changed somewhat since the printing of our brochure and descriptions posted on the website. The enclosed acceptance packet represents the program as it is now scheduled to run. As is stated within this packet, we rely heavily on outside organizations to provide internships and guest lectures. Occasionally, the organizations that we work with will change their schedules. When this happens, we adjust our schedule accordingly and almost always successfully. As such, you should look to the below program description not as a Bible, but as a guide. We are currently updating our website to reflect the changes we have made as well.
Expectations
Depending on the internship track you choose, you will either need to work as a team with other group members (4-14 students) or in a more solitary arrangement. Throughout the semester, our philosophy places great importance on working together as a group, as well as securing space for the individual. For this reason we encourage you to utilize your internship opportunity with an independent and open mind. Through such reflection, you will connect to the cultural surroundings and environment in a more meaningful and lasting way.
We would also like to remind you that our program is logistically and academically
intensive. There is academic content to the program that you should be
prepared for. You will receive a pre-trip reader before the program starts.
You should plan to complete the reader before arriving to the Hawaiian
Islands. This is a tremendous learning opportunity and a chance to bond
with fellow students, staff and those with whom you work with during your
internships.

You should expect to experience a wide array of accommodation options during your three-country exploration. Dormitories and hostels may house students three per room, or, up to fourteen in a large open bay depending on location. For the most part, accommodations are clean, safe and comfortable but basic. Participants should be prepared to live communally with all that entails.
Food Costs:
Purchasing food is your responsibility throughout the three-month program. Your course instructors will make sure that you have access to food vendors / major supermarkets at least once a week, and will guide you to make sure you buy adequate provisions until the next shopping opportunity. You should budget $12.00 per day for food in Hawaii / Fiji / Australia: more if you eat out at restaurants. We recommend that you bring $2000.00 dollars in traveler's checks, leave the receipts at home, and carry a VISA debit card for ATM withdrawals and emergency purposes. Make sure the debit card has a visa symbol or it will not work in Fiji.
