The important internship areas available are:
Teaching Assistant
As a Teaching Assistant, interns will be assigned to a teacher and a classroom. Interns will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a teacher to share responsibilities of the classroom. You will help plan lessons, assign and correct assignments. You may be asked to conduct Story Time, set up science experiments for teachers, help with a literacy fair and spelling bee.. Additionally, you will act as a tutor in reading and math, offering private attention to students on difficult coursework. You will assist in physical education, sometimes organizing your own activities and games for the students.
Women & Children's Shelter
Interns and volunteers will contribute thirty to forty hours per week to the completion of tasks and projects assigned according to their skills, interests and experience with domestic violence issues. Those willing to commit to longer time periods will be given more responsibility. Interns and volunteers have the opportunity to work on the hotline, coordinate activities for the shelter's children, interact with clients, act as assistant to an advocate or shelter worker, and contribute to the client education program and shelter newsletter. All interns and volunteers will complete a comprehensive training that introduces them to the work and clientele of the shelter.
At-risk-youth Mentor
As an At-Risk Youth Mentor, you will participate in programs that teach youth goal-oriented behaviors which they can apply at school, home and in their community and help youth further develop leadership skills. The mentor may also be asked to help with a program that serves youth ages 5 to 15 living in homeless transitional shelters with their families. The P.A.L.S. (Positive Adult Leaders in Society) program provides one-on-one mentoring and positive role models to youth whose parents are often focused on more immediate needs. offers individual mentoring, encourages academic achievement and provides positive adult interaction. All mentors receive comprehensive training and on-going coaching and support as they mentor once a week with their young person. Monthly workshops on age-appropriate topics and social activities strengthen outcomes for program participants.
Interns have the opportunity to choose based on their interests and the needs. Each intern has a unique background and a variety of aptitudes that will benefit different programs. The internship is designed to be a learning experience for both the intern as well as the adolescents with whom they work.
Community Theater
Interns have a chance to involve themselves in multiple aspects of production - including management, organization, creative direction, and design--and will be assigned tasks according to their interests and skills. Interns who excel in these duties will have a chance to assume increasing levels of responsibility on individual projects. Previous intern projects have included assisting the technical director, constructing, painting, and striking sets, assisting in costume design, and organizing stage props. This is a unique project, in that interns will immediately be able to see the application of their efforts as the production unfolds and takes the stage. This internship also offers the added benefit of interaction with a diverse range of members of the local community. Availability and Requirements Positions are available year-round. However, interns' placement must coincide with the production schedule, when the most help is needed--usually 5 to 7 weeks prior to production.
Cultural Museum
Interns will help share the history, culture, and art of Phoenix and the Salt River Valley with the public by greeting and assisting visitors from around the world, selling Museum memberships, providing support during special exhibitions and at various Museum events, helping children and families during special family programs or school tours, assisting in the Museum offices.
During special exhibitions, volunteers help with a variety of duties, including being in the galleries, assisting visitors, organizing school groups, answering questions, giving directions and taking tickets.
The city art museum offers participation opportunities that include assisting with activities developed for teenagers, assist staff and visitors with art-making activities and related performances during “Kids Day”, welcoming visitors to sketch in the galleries and provide materials or assistance. Previous drawing experience or knowledge is not required.
The duties mentioned above are just some of the possible responsibilities of the volunteers. The experience can be changed depending on the skills and interests of the intern. Training at the museums is provided.
Computer Service Center
Interns will assist with all aspects of daily operations, learning the ins and outs of running a small computer business. As this company has a limited staff, interns must be willing to assume a variety of tasks. Specifically, you will learn how to assess hardware and software problems. You will learn how to operate a wide range of computer diagnostic equipment. You may join the staff in the field as they perform out calls within the community. You will learn how to produce invoices and handle the inflow and outflow of cash. Once steeped in the field, you may handle phone inquiries and sales as well.
Website Design & Internet Service Provider
Interns will assist with all aspects of daily operations, learning the ins and outs of running a small business and the internet industry. As this company has a small staff, interns must be willing to assume a variety of tasks. Specifically, interns will be able to develop customer service skills, assist with technical support and work on business related projects. Exceptional interns who display capability and enthusiasm have the opportunity to assume higher levels of responsibility, and possibly gain ownership of their own projects.
Interns with a keen interest in website design will have the opportunity to assist and learn design projects. Employers are looking now more than ever for resumes that include website design or at the minimum, some ability to update current websites. This internship can provide an invaluable opportunity to gain experience with the latest in website design technology.
Motel (Front Desk)
Duties may include: answering telephone, greeting and assisting guests, guest check in and reservation processing, updating the current events, local attractions boards.
Environmental Conservation
Interns will work on projects to preserve, protect, and maintain Arizona’s natural environment. Events are carefully planned to provide enjoyable and productive opportunity to participate in trail work and ecological restoration projects such as restore & protect native habitat; remove noxious weeds & reestablish native plants...and more.
