Maritime Museum
Project Introduction
Intern at a downtown Honolulu museum that focuses on Hawaii’s maritime history. The two-story museum covers everything from the settling of Hawaii, to the voyages of Captain Cook, to the history of surfing. The center includes two Polynesian voyaging canoes, and the Falls of Clyde.
Location - Hilo, Hawaii
Thespians and visitors alike will enjoy decadent, dramatic surroundings even before entering the doors of this theater. The theater stands in the middle of a lush valley, about a five- to ten-minute bus ride from intern accommodations at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a 20-minute bus ride from downtown Honolulu. Built on the site of a 19th century chapel, the theater rests inside a graveyard, complete with crumbling stone markers and tree boughs reaching out to partially conceal the building. Nearby storefronts offer fruit, vegetables, groceries, and coffee.
Job Description
Three full-time staff members and several volunteers staff the Center. The small size means that the entire staff and interns are involved with all aspects of the Museum. Interns do everything from handling the admission counter and gift shop to assisting with publicity. Perhaps most importantly, interns handle school groups: providing information about the unique history of maritime Hawaii. Interns are allowed to develop, with helpful supervision, their own educational program.
Requirements
Interns must be at least 18 years old, enjoy public speaking and able to handle multi-task position.
Minimum Length of Stay
Minimum 8 weeks (240 hours)
Additional Requirements
The duties mentioned above are some of the possible responsibilities of the volunteers, however the experience can be changed depending on the skills and interests of the intern. Other possible responsibilities include restoration work aboard a lifesize maritime vessel, or working with the Polynesian Voyaging Society. The volunteers experience also allows the participant a chance to interact with the Hawaiian community including local school children and the local maritime community.
