Dive Shop / Dive Instructor Assistant

Project:

Koh Chang--one of the last of the Thai island archipeligoes not yet overrun by rampant development--is home to our Dive Shop/ Reef Survey internship. Working with both Thai and Western staff members, you have the opportunity to become PADI dive certifed (or work toward the next level of your training). In addition, you will assist staff members in all aspects of running a renowned dive shop as well as working on a marine research project.

Activities will include:

* Assisting staff on dive excursions in the Gulf of Thailand.

* Helping to convey difficult concepts in the English language to guests.

* Preparation of gear for dives.

* Constrcution / delivery of marketing materials.

* Conducting reef surveys to assist reef management.

* Preparation of brochure / website to highlight threats to Thailand's reefs

The conservation component of this internship focuses on conducting an in-water survey of the most prolific reefs in the Gulf. In addition, you will be asked to contribute to a website and create a brochure whose aim is to educate the public on threats to Thailand's reefs and the Koh Chang ecosystem in particular.

Location:

The 'elephant island', is the second largest island in the Gulf of Thailand after Phuket. It is close to the Cambodian border in Trat province, approximately 300 km southeast from Bangkok. In 1982 Koh Chang and 46 other smaller islands were designated to the 650 square kilometre Mu Ko Chang National Park. Koh Chang proper extends over almost 30 kilometres in length and approximately 17 kilometres in width. The westernmost point is situated roughly 27 kilometres east of the 102. degree line of longitude, the 12. degree line of latitude runs about a kilometre north of Baan Salak Phet.

Housing:

Private accomodations with bathroom and shower within the unit. You will be located a short walk from the Bay.

Availability and Requirements

Position is available November through May. No previous dive experience is necessary. A willingness to assist tourists and staff is essential.
