Dive Shop | Marine Research

Project Introduction

Koh Chang--one of the last of the Thai island archipelagoes not yet overrun by rampant development--is home to our Dive Shop/ Reef Survey internship. Working with both Thai and Western staff members, you have the opportunity to become PADI dive certified (or work toward the next level of your training). In addition, you will assist staff members in all aspects of running a renowned dive shop as well as working on a marine research project.

Activities will include:

  1. Assisting staff on dive excursions in the Gulf of Thailand
  2. Helping to convey difficult concepts in the English language to guests
  3. Preparation of gear for dives
  4. Construction / delivery of marketing materials
  5. Conducting reef surveys to assist reef management
  6. Preparation of brochure / website to highlight threats to Thailand's reefs

The conservation component of this internship focuses on conducting an in-water survey of the most prolific reefs in the Gulf. In addition, you will be asked to contribute to a website and create a brochure whose aim is to educate the public on threats to Thailand's reefs and the Koh Chang ecosystem in particular.

The 'elephant island', is the second largest island in the Gulf of Thailand after Phuket. It is close to the Cambodian border in Trat province, approximately 300 km southeast from Bangkok. Koh Chang proper extends over almost 30 kilometers in length and approximately 17 kilometers in width. The westernmost point is situated roughly 27 kilometers east of the 102. Degree line of longitude, the 12. Degree line of latitude runs about a kilometer north of Baan Salak Phet.
